I spent 15 minutes this morning clearing my drain. Not good. Especially when the little yellow rubber gloves are too short and you have to reach down past your elbow to clear out the blockage. I mean, we’ve all been there haven’t we… er… oh, just me then?
Fat, grease, hair, tuna pieces and Lord knows what else. With my face down two inches from the floor, arm covered in sludge, trying not to breathe in the stench coming from below… I’d love to tell you I had an epiphany of some sort. No such luck.
I spent another 15 minutes showering. Just my arm. Isn’t it weird how, no matter how much hot water or disinfectant you use, your brain can defy logic and just scream “UNCLEAN, UNCLEAN!!!”.
So. What’s this got to do with the release of the new WordPress “Getz” (version 2.2)? Let’s see how I get out of this one… Thankfully I know about “reframing” things – something you learn when go for NLP training .
Well, the connection between clearing the drain with WordPress Getz wasn’t made this morning. Quite a few things happened along the way…
I’ve spent most of the day researching plugins for a new one that’s on the “plugins to build” list. Funnily enough we’re looking to build a new Sidebar management plugin. During the course of my research I found an article by Lorelle on WordPress about the Widgets she uses on her site. Admittedly, I’ve not been keeping my eye on the ball recently so completely missed out on this whole Widgets on the sidebar of your WordPress blog thing. They look really cool – you can add quite a few things to the side of your blogs now.
A little later, I came across this interesting article on Metaphors in copywriting. Ironically, it was the image of Chris Cornell from Soundgarden that made me read the Post. So much for pulling in users with well written copy then! Saying that, I do like metaphors… like the one you’re wondering about right now and how WordPress 2.2 all ties in with cleaning drains…
I’ve also been spending a little bit of time today reading Jack Humphrey’s Authority Black Book. It’s an excellent read. If you really want to know about how to leverage the whole Web 2.0 thing and get your site tons of traffic, then you have to get this NOW! It’s free at the moment, so download your copy before he changes his mind!
I have to say, I have a certain ambivalence to Jack’s Black Book (not Jack Black’s book – great actor but I doubt he knows as much as Jack Humphreys on creating Authority sites!).
On the one hand, there’s so much useful information packed into the book for you to start getting your site ranked well. It’s really inspirational. On the other hand, there’s so much useful information packed into the book for you to start getting worried about where to start!
“Where there is clarity, there is no choice. And where there is choice, there is misery” Swami, Head (1968) (I’ve always liked that quote ).
But I think Jack’s got it covered. Thankfully, he’s co-founder of the Authority Site Center so you can set up your own authority site very easily.
“Zain… what’s all of this got to do with WordPress Getz and drains? Get to the point, man!”. Sheesh, internal dialogues, eh?
Well, it’s like this. If I’d taken the time to maintain my drains, I wouldn’t have to clean the mess when the bath backs up and be, quite literally, up to my neck in sh*t (please excuse my language!). The same goes for running your small business. I had my mind on some personal issues for a while which has resulted in me missing the whole WordPress landscape changing. WordPress “Getz” now has Widgets to amend the sidebar. So, looks like I’ll have to scrap my plans for a new Sidebar plugin… or does it?
Water flows smoothly. So do ideas. Unless you tackle the blockages, you can’t get past them. The WordPress Widgets aren’t a blockage – now that I know about them. And we all know that “knowing” is essential for focus and clarity. It just means the new plugin’s going to be much better than I’d previously imagined. And that’s “reframing”, in an NLP sense.
I’ve learnt so many things today. With the help of Lorelle, Copyblogger.com and Jack Humphrey, I’ve now got new ideas. Standing on the shoulders of giants means I can now see further. Attending to problems before they start (like reading the Authority Black Book, which I should have done *ages* ago!) can save you a lot of time down the line. I completely forgot about the 6 P’s in Project Management: “Proper Planning Prevent’s P*ss Poor Performance”. It’s worthwhile to note (write it down!).
Well, there is one more thing (something Internet Marketers may want to take note of). You may be spending a lot of your time doing all of the work yourself.
If I’d known what I’d be getting myself into this morning when I set about doing the drain, I’d have phoned for a plumber to come, clear it and just paid the man to do a job I didn’t really want to do. The same thing goes for your business – why get yourself in a mess doing things that you can pay other people to do? I’d have saved my time and my brain wouldn’t be going “EEEeeuuuugggghhhh!!!” everything I think back to…
Bye for now… I’m just going to have another shower!
