WordPress 2.5: Changing Saved Page Slugs

Okay. I’ve had a couple of emails and comments from some Internet Marketers/WordPress SEO types worried about WordPress 2.5 (Brecker) and SAVED page slugs. Everyone seems to be fretting about how you can’t edit these!

“OMFG The Sky Is Falling!”

Chill.

Lighten up.

It’s possible.

Yet again, I’m here to the rescue and will be showing you with a quick and easy, step-by-step, easy how-to guide on changing your saved page slugs.

Firstly, let me reassure you that you’re not mad – I can’t change those saved Page Slugs either in WordPress 2.5! It’s okay though because I’m full of solutions – that’s why people hire me to build their sites! ;)

Let me say that once again – this is for Posts/Pages that have already been saved – if you’re looking for how you edit them in the first place, then read my original post on How To Change WordPress 2.5 Page Slugs. The original article will show you how it’s done in the first place – this post will show you what to when you mess it up but don’t want to delete your entire post and go through all of that nonsense of copying and pasting the old stuff into a new post etc.

So are you ready?

Right.

The first thing that you need to do is to download, upload and activate the ultimate SEO plugin for WordPress: “HeadSpace2″ by John Godley (the excellent Developer who helped to make the WordPress FAQ-Tastic plugin a reality). If you have problems reaching his site because it’s down (like it was yesterday, then you can also get HeadSpace from WordPress Plugins).

Why do I rate this plugin so much? Well, because I had a big hand in re-developing it specifically for Search Engine Optimization so I could use it myself. (Why do you think my site ranks well for various keyword/phrases? Why do you think I’m getting 2 entries in Google for various phrases? :P ). If you have older plugins like Tags In The Head or All In One SEO pack, then you can easily import those settings into HeadSpace2 (yes, we even thought of wiping out the competition by making it easy to transfer data! :) ). I can hear your internal dialogue and I’d just have to say “You’re wrong! Okay? Junk the others, and just use HeadSpace. K? K…”. There’s a whole host of features that I’m yet to document yet… nuts, again another one of those outstanding projects I’ve got to get on top of!

Anyway, here’s the step by step bit once you’ve installed the plugin (with another one of my lovely screenshots – the things I do for you guys!):

  1. Click on Manage.
  2. Click on Meta-Data.
  3. Click on the dropdown menu arrow on the right side.
  4. Select Page Slugs from the dropdown.
  5. Click on the Go button.

Wait for the screen to refresh and come up with your existing Page Slugs.

  1. Edit the Page Slug you want to change.
  2. Click on Save All Data.

Now… how painless was that?

If you’ve got any further questions on this (I really hope not… Sheesh! How much simpler do you need it to be?!?!)… well, I got the FAQ-Tastic product launch to focus on, so you’re going to have to figure it out yourself!

Yes, I did find your posts in a state of panic :P . And I agree that Headspace rocks. However, after finding your great suggestion for using Headspace to change slugs, I then looked at my site.. and realized I hadn’t changed the permalinks to custom. Once I changed the permalinks, the option to change slug showed on both the Pages and posts that had been saved.

It makes sense, really. You don’t need to change slug if you are not using permalinks so the link doesn’t show until you do.

    Thanks anyway ;)

    Hi Zain,
my problem is kinda similar, I’m using wp 2.5.1 I’ve created a several category/subcategory. One sub-category I created called sacred-heart-tattoo but the slug has been automatically named sacred-heart-tattoo-tattoo-design.

no matter what I do I canot get rid of the extra text i.e. “-tattoo-design”. I tried removing and recreting the the sub-category several times but each time I saved the changes the sub-category vname reverts back to “sacred-heart-tattoo-tattoo-design”.

All the other sub-categories were created with the correct slug

I’m using custom permalinks, any ideas how I get rid of this
    annoyance?

    many thanks
    Lee

I was just looking for a way to change the page slug for a wordpress page. Totally forgot I already had headspace and what it all does. Is it taking care of the redirect too or is that something we’d need to get a redirection plugin for?

  7. Placement Papers Says:

Same problem as with Lee. The parent category name appears in the sub category slug. Its like mysite.com/category/animals/cat-animals where as it should be /animals/cat
    Please help.
